Day 2, Anchorage to Cordova (5/15)  MAP
We had a 30 minute flight from Anchorage to Cordova on Alaska Airlines in a small modern jet, holding 140 seats.  The visibility was unlimited.  We flew at 20k feet and we were able to see many snow covered mountains and glaciers grinding themselves into the sea.  The weather was perfect.  It got up to almost 70 today. Cordova is only accessible by airplane or boat.  It’s a small commercial fishing village. The day we arrived was the first day of the fishing season.  Most of the town was out on the water trying to make a living.
We stayed at the Blue Heron Inn, which was a house similar to ours.  The owners Vicki and Michael lived on the 2nd floor.  The first floor was our apartment with full kitchen, three beds, and a nice porch.  The porch has a natural waterfall on one side, and the water flows under the deck.  There was a sauna (see photo below), a small garden, and lots of Alaska 'shore junk': cork floats, marker lights, lifesavers with ship’s names on them.  Hummingbirds visit the feeder and we saw several Stellar bluejay.  The sound of the waterfall is wonder full, and we’re 110 feet from the bay.
We’ve rented their 198x Dodge Diplomat for our stay.  We didn’t look like tourists when we drove up in that car.  The speed limit in Cordova is 40, so it did fine. Gas here is $1.62 a gallon, back in Anchorage it was $1.19.  After settling in, we visited the town and met up with our kayak guide (tiny yellow shack, in above photo).  He had been out in a jet boat getting fish from the first day's catch to be put on the plane that we flew in on.  Its final destination was Washington DC for a Senator’s dinner.
